How air separation works |
At Messer, air is the raw material from which the individual gaseous components oxygen, nitrogen and argon, as well as the rare inert gases krypton and xenon are extracted in their purest form. We obtain these pure gases using air separation units. These are utilized in a number of industrial processes to make them both safe and profitable.
The air is drawn in large compressors for compression. The gas mixture is cooled until its liquid stage in heat exchangers. This occurs at extremely low temperatures of up to negative 196 degrees. Since the individual air components vaporize at different temperatures, they can be separated in tall separation columns and extracted in their pure form.
